Organic nursery decor is a healthy choice for your little angel.

Does your nursery decor appeal to more than your eyes? If your little one will be sleeping in the room right away, you will want to make sure it is pleasing to all of the senses.

Here are some tips to help you as you create an organic baby nursery.

1. Choose paint that is low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Your delicate baby doesn't need to inhale these harmful chemicals. The label on the paint can will say low, zero- or no-VOC. You can also choose plant or milk-based paints if neither of the parents has a known allergy to these types of materials.

You should also paint as far in advance of the baby's delivery as you can. The same goes for putting up wall paper. Look for non-toxic adhesives and eco-friendly wall paper.

2. Organic baby bedding is one of the simplest and most affordable ways to incorporate organic nursery decor.

If you can pry your baby out of your arms, he or she will spend most of their hours snuggled up on the sheets and mattress you choose. Since babies breathe more deeply in their sleep, they are more susceptible to the toxins and fumes that make up their bedding.

An organic cotton crib sheet will softer, more durable and free of pesticides found in conventional cotton. Likewise, choosing a mattress made from organic wool fibers allows you to skip the chemical flame retardants, because the wool is naturally flame retardant.

3. Natural wood nursery furniture is the safest for a teething baby.

Babies put their mouths on everything. Inexpensive pressed wood furniture made of Medium Density Fiberboard is often treated with formaldehyde - a known carcinogen. Instead choose wood furniture made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood.

4. If you're getting new flooring, go for natural materials and adhesives.

Natural wood flooring is an eco-friendly nursery decor choice if you choose an FSC certified provider. However, it's not just about the wood, make sure your installation company uses non-toxic polishes, finishes and stains to avoid having unnecessary chemicals in your home.

Synthetic carpets can also emit formaldehyde gasses for years after installation. Jute, hemp and wool carpets (or area rugs) are natural fibers that will let your family breathe easily.

5. Be wise when you accessorize.

Brand new storage baskets, window treatments and toys can all be sources of unwanted chemicals in your baby's nursery. In many cases items that have been handed down are a better choice because they have likely emitted all of their fumes.

However, don't feel you have to go borrow accessories to have a safe nursery. You can buy things in advance, wash them if appropriate or let them air out for a day or so in the sun. Another way to do this is to have plenty of green plants in your home and one in the nursery. Plants naturally purify the air of toxins.

Thanks for the helpful tips. I'll be decorating a nursery soon and have been reading a lot about healthy and earth-friendly choices that consumers can make. I'll be looking for the low VOC paint.
